From time to time, team members will share their views stimulated from a piece by an industry thought leader. Here, our Director of Paid Marketing, Kim Figor, discusses an Forbes article by contributors, David Sturt and Todd Nordstron, “Uncommon Sense: Stop Giving These 5 Pieces Of Common Advice.”

Have you ever noticed how most everyone has a popular “cliché” advice piece for just about every possible situation imaginable? I would even say it appears that the frequency of “one-liner” advice conversations increase as the emotional toll of a situation increases.

Why is it so easy for humans to spout off memorized clichés as if they alone were enough to “fix” any situation, let alone a highly emotional situation? Maybe it is easier than having a real conversation with someone. Or, maybe they have become an excuse to justify our own actions and take responsibility for being truthful with ourselves.

I don’t know the answers and I’m not implying that these don’t have value. However, I do agree with the authors that blurting out advice (to oneself or others) in the wrong context needs to stop as it can do more harm than good.
