Problem

If you consider Pinterest to be a social network for brides and hobbyists only, it might be time to take a second look.

Pinterest is an image-centric, virtual pin board incorporated into a social network. It’s a platform that allows users to save and share virtual content to these boards by pinning and liking images of items they find interesting.

What you probably didn’t know is Pinterest considers itself to be more of a search and discovery service than a social network. In fact, Pinterest users are uniquely interested in and engaged with products, so it is a worthwhile place for businesses to have a presence.

Not only that, but Pinterest is focusing on adding products and monetization efforts for business to extend their reach within the community.

Solution

Ok, let’s get back to Pinterest. Including this platform in your marketing efforts is a creative way to build your online brand presence. Start by determining your target audience using Pinterest analytics. Then, organize and develop your boards in a way that defines who you are and engages your visitors. Here are 5 strategies to get you started:

1. Optimize your boards: match key words users would use to find you both in the board title and the brief description.

2. Optimize pin descriptions: often underutilized, descriptions help users understand the context of the pinned image. They also help drive user engagement with likes, comments and re-pins – not to mention visits to your site.

3. Use Rich Pins: there are 6 types of Rich Pins that allow your business to add additional, distinctive information to your pin. Though each of the 6 Rich Pins require more back-end work, they will help users interact with your business in unique ways and will drive more prospects to your website. Be sure to check them out!

4. Engage: Pinterest works just like all other social media in that by giving you get. Don’t be product or service pushy; be social – engage with both your followers and other users. Being active makes your business more visible by constantly generating fresh content – which we know is a key factor in SEO.

5. Install the Pin It button: as you know, the path of least resistance is usually the path taken. Make it easy for your customers, prospects or readers to pin and share any of your website or blog content with only a few clicks by installing the Pin It button on your website. This will get your content in front of audiences you don’t even know – yet!
