Recently, I’ve spent a lot of time researching and learning about the benefits to a company when employees are 100% engaged at work. Wow! Was I amazed to learn that fully engaged employees produce 1.5 the results as an employee who is average. Even more startling was to learn that employees who are not engaged perform at only half of an average employee.

Thinking about our company, I started my research with the question, “How can I help all my team members stay fully engaged?” But then this thought occurred to me, “Am I fully engaged 100% of the time?”

I would have liked to answer that question as “yes”, but to be honest, I can’t. There are times when I’m not fully engaged. Even though I will admit that there is a lot management can do to assist in keeping employees fully engaged, I also believe that each person also has some responsibility.

The first step is to spend some time doing an honest self-evaluation to figure out what is going on in my life during the times I don’t feel like I’m fully engaged. Then, take action to change the circumstances, my responses to the circumstance, or even my perception of the circumstances. Of course, this will differ with everyone as we are all unique individuals.
